2nd BC Ethics Bowl Judges and Moderators:

Sylvia Berryman is associate professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia, where she has taught since 2004. She studies ancient Greek philosophy and science, Aristotelian ethics, and ethics and global poverty.

AlanBelk is a Philosophers’ Café moderator.

Cody Brooks has completed his Masters in philosophy at SFU in 2019.

Ian Brooks is a Lecturer at Fraser International College, where he teaches philosophy and rhetoric. He specializes in virtue ethics. From his background in engineering, he takes an interest in professional ethics. This will be his second time judging an Ethics Bowl, and he would like to thank participants for their hard work in preparing.

Lyle Crawford teaches philosophy at many institutions in the Greater Vancouver, including Simon Fraser University and Fraser International College. He currently devotes most of his teaching to critical thinking, and he has been involved in many outreach activities.

Frank Cunningham is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Toronto. He was on the writing teams for the Ontario Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses in philosophy, and is a founding officer of the Ontario Philosophy Teachers Association (the Ontario Ministry recognized Subject Association for philosophy).

Tom Donaldson studied mathematics and philosophy at Oxford, before moving to Rutgersto complete a PhD in philosophy. He taught at Stanford before moving to Simon Fraser University. He spends most of his time thinking about truth and mathematics. With Steve Stich, he wrote the book Philosophy: Asking Questions, Seeking Answers, which you should certainly buy without delay.

Cem Erkli has been a graduate student in philosophy at SFU since fall 2017, after completing his BA in Philosophy at Bilkent University, Turkey.

Susan Gardner is Professor of philosophy at Capilano University. Her main research focuses on critical thinking and Philosophy for Children (P4C). According to Gardner, a necessary condition of a well-lived life is that one learns how to think well.

Bruno Guindon is Lecturer of philosophy at SFU. He regularly teaches courses in ethics. His research focuses on rationality and reasons, both theoretical and practical.

Sarah Hogarth Rossiter wanted to be a mathematician when she was in highs chool; an under graduate course in logic, however, set her on a more philosophical track. Now, Sarah is an historian of medieval philosophy, having completed her PhD at Western University in 2017. She moved to the BC Lower Mainland two years ago, and currently teaches philosophy at both Douglas College and Columbia College. When not helping students sort their modus ponens from their modus tollens, Sarah can be found creating beautiful music with a number of local choirs, or creating beautiful fabric on either her loom or her knitting needles.

James Hutchinson is currently Lecturer of Philosophy at SFU. Jim works mostly on issues in epistemology, especially as they appear in the modern and early analytic periods and in connection with logic.

Fiona MacDonald is an Associate Professor specializing in Political Theory at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Aaron Mascarenhas has been a graduate student in philosophy at SFU since fall 2019.

Hesam Mohamadi has been a graduate student in philosophy at SFU since fall 2019.

VarshaPai has been a graduate student in philosophy at SFU since fall 2017.
Elliot Rossiter Elliot Rossiter is a regular faculty member in the Department of Philosophy & Humanities at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC. His research and teaching focuses primarily on issues related to the history of ethics and applied ethics.

Farshad Sadoughian has completed his Masters  in philosophy at SFU in 2019.
Kesavan Thanagopal entered the MA program in fall 2019 following a DPhil in Mathematics

from the University of Oxford, UK and an MA in Philosophy, specialising in Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics from the University of Bristol.
Evan Tiffany is a Professor of philosophy at SFU, and currently Chair of the department.

Jennifer Wang completed her PhD on modal metaphysics at Rutgers University, and has subsequently taught at the University of Georgia, Stanford University, and SFU. In 2017, she coached the Hillsdale High School Ethics Bowl team, who were semifinalists in the Northern California High School Ethics Bowl.

Xinyu Xu has been a graduate student in philosophy at SFU since fall 2019.
Jenna Yuzwa has been a graduate student in philosophy at SFU since fall 2019. She graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a BA (Honours) in Philosophy and a double minor in English and Theatre and Film.
